A retractable belt stanchion is a weighted post with a belt that pulls out of the head and clips into the next post. It is the fastest way to build a queue line that can be changed in seconds, and the most common crowd control barrier in airports, banks, stadiums, retail and reception areas. Posts start at $44.55 and belts run from 7.5 ft to 200 ft.
We have been an authorized distributor since 2002, carrying Queue Solutions, Visiontron, Tensator, Lavi Industries and US Weight. If you would rather have someone spec the run with you, call (800) 516-2115 or request a quote.
How many stanchions do you need?
Divide the length of the run by the belt length, then add one. A 50 ft line with 13 ft belts needs about five posts — four gaps plus the post that closes the run.
Two things change that number. Every corner needs its own post, because a belt only pulls in a straight line — an L-shaped queue is two runs, not one. And a longer belt covers the same distance with fewer posts, which usually costs less overall and is certainly less to store and carry.
Worth doing the arithmetic both ways before you order. Ten posts on 7.5 ft belts and six posts on 13 ft belts cover almost the same ground, and the second option is four fewer things to move, store and eventually replace.
What belt length should you choose?
Most indoor queues are built on 11 ft or 13 ft belts, and that is what we would order without a specific reason not to. The full range is wider than most buyers realise:
-
7.5 – 8.5 ft — tight lobbies, short runs, anywhere posts need to sit close together. QueueMaster 550 from $53.00
-
10 – 11 ft — the general-purpose length. Retracta-Belt Prime from $44.55
-
13 – 16 ft — wide concourses and fewer posts per run. QueuePro 300 from $159.12
-
20 ft — long single spans. QueuePro 400 from $259.00
-
75 – 200 ft — closing a whole yard, dock or airfield apron from one post. SkyPro, $779 to $2,670
Order longer than the gap you are closing. A belt pulled to its full extension sags in the middle and wears the mechanism faster. A little slack is what the cassette is designed for.
Which post weight do you need?
Weight is the decision most buyers get wrong, and it goes in both directions. A heavy base is harder to knock over — and harder to move on purpose. Decide which of those two problems you actually have.
Lightweight and portable. Plastic posts are the ones staff will actually carry, set out and put away every day. They suit events, schools, car parks and anywhere the line moves. Sentry plastic stanchions from $79.99 a pair, $199.99 for six. The Beltrac Tempest at $98.28 is the outdoor-rated version, and the QueuePro Clear at $119.40 is the one that stays visually out of the way in a finished room. The full range is under plastic stanchions and chains.
Heavy duty. Steel posts on weighted bases stay where they are put and survive being knocked, dragged and reset several times a day. The Tensabarrier 886 from $109.00 and the Retracta-Belt Prime HD from $74.00 are the workhorses here.
All of our retractable barrier bases are weighted and balanced so they are not easily tipped, with a rubber ring underneath to protect the floor.
Do you need a post at all?
Often not. A wall-mounted retractable belt closes a doorway, aisle or stairwell with nothing standing in the floor — the unit fixes to the wall, the belt pulls across to a receiver clip opposite, and it retracts out of the way when you do not need it.
Nothing to store, nothing to trip over, and no post to go missing. Units run 7.5 ft to 75 ft from $37.95, in fixed, removable, recessed and magnetic mountings — the magnetic ones hold to racking, machine guards and roller shutters without drilling anything at all. The Tensabarrier 896 at $99.00 is the Tensator equivalent.
For a permanent line, wall mounts and floor posts are usually mixed: the run starts at a wall unit and finishes on a post.
Do you need a retractable safety barrier rather than a queue post?
If the barrier is there to keep people out rather than in line, it is a different product. A safety barrier carries a high-visibility belt with a printed warning and is built to be seen, not to look tidy in a lobby.
Safety stanchions come in yellow or yellow/black with printed CAUTION, DANGER and DO NOT ENTER belts in place of the plain belt: the SafetyPro range ($117.24 to $339.40), plus SafetyMaster, RollerSafety and the SkyPro long-run units, in single, twin and triple belt heads. They cover wet floors, maintenance work, plant rooms and restricted access. Striped and reflective striped posts carry it further where lighting is poor, and the school safety range is the same idea sized for corridors and drop-off zones. For traffic, a cone topper turns cones you already own into a belted line.
Can you connect different brands together?
Usually yes. Most retractable belt stanchions use a universal belt end that clips into the receiver on another maker's post, so Retracta-Belt, Tensabarrier, Beltrac and Queue Solutions posts will generally link to one another. Magnetic and S-clip belt ends are the exceptions to check — those grip the belt or a rail rather than seating in a receiver.
Worth knowing if you are adding to a line you already own. Tell us what is already on site and we will confirm before you order.
What is the difference between a 2" and a 3" belt?
Width, visibility and how well it carries print. A 3" Xtra-wide belt reads from further away and shows a printed message clearly; a 2" belt is the standard and costs less.
They are not interchangeable — the cassette and the post head differ, so this is decided when you buy the post, not afterwards. If the belt is going to carry a safety warning or a logo, the 3" is worth the difference. If it is marking a queue in a lobby, the 2" is the right call.
Can you get your logo or a safety message on the belt?
Yes, and this is the part most catalogue sellers cannot do. Belts come in a wide range of colours, with stock messages such as CAUTION and AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY, or custom printed with your own wording and logo. Custom printing carries a one-off setup charge and runs on a lead time rather than shipping as a standard item.
A printed belt does more work than a plain one. People walk through a barrier that does not tell them why it is there.
What signs and sign holders fit these posts?
Post-top sign frames are brand-specific and are not interchangeable — a Tensabarrier frame will not seat on a Beltrac head. Match the fitting to the post you own, and if you are buying both together, decide the signage before the posts.

How do you store and move them?
On a stanchion cart, and it is the accessory most people buy second. Posts stacked in a corner get chipped, and carrying them two at a time across a venue is how bases get dropped.
Horizontal carts hold 12 to 21 posts and roll as one load — from $427.70 — while a vertical cart at $675.50 keeps posts upright and takes less floor space in a store room. The WeatherMaster cart at $939.50 is the covered one for equipment that lives outside. Full range under storage carts.
If the posts get set out and put away for every event, budget for the cart at the same time as the posts. It is the difference between a twenty-minute job and an hour.
Can these be used outdoors?
Some of them, and it has to be specified when you order. Outdoor use needs a weather-rated post and a weather-rated belt — an indoor post left outside will corrode at the base and the belt will fade.
The Tensabarrier 885 from $132.00 uses a fillable base you weight on site with sand or water, which is the right answer for wind. Many Queue Solutions posts take a weatherized option specified at the time of ordering. See site safety and outdoor stanchions for the full range.
The belt is worn or will not retract. Do you need a new stanchion?
Almost never. The belt and its mechanism come out as one cassette that drops into the existing post head, at a fraction of the cost of a new post.
This is worth knowing before you replace anything: a line of twenty tired posts is usually twenty cassettes, not twenty posts. One caveat — Master series cassettes have been discontinued by the manufacturer while Pro series cassettes are still available, so the repair path depends on which range you own. The belt cassette fitment guide will tell you which one fits your model, and replacement parts covers cassettes, belt ends, receiver clips and floor sockets across all the brands here.
What do retractable belt stanchions cost?
Between $44.55 and about $340 per post, with most indoor queue posts landing between $55 and $170. Multi-belt heads and multi-post kits sit above that.
What moves the price is the post line and the base, not the belt length. A QueueMaster 550 is $53.00 and a QueuePro 250 doing the same job in the same room starts at $109.76 — the difference is base weight, finish quality and warranty, not function. Wall units undercut both at $37.95 because there is no base to pay for.
On a multi-post order, check the freight before you commit. These are heavy, bulky items and shipping is the part buyers most often get surprised by.
Most of our retractable belt stanchions are designed and assembled in the USA from US and imported components — as it happens, several of our manufacturers sit within a few miles of one another on Long Island, New York. They are backed by a 3 to 5 year warranty, rising to 10 years on the Visiontron Retracta-Belt range. Ask us about a specific model and we will tell you exactly where it is built.
