Plastic Stanchions and Chains

Plastic stanchions are the outdoor and industrial answer to crowd control — lighter than steel, unaffected by rain, and cheap enough that a damaged post is replaced rather than repaired. They carry chain rather than a retractable belt, which handles wind and rough handling far better over long runs.

Pick a diameter first

The size is the pole diameter and it maps directly to duty:

• 2" light duty — indoor and short-term layouts, roughly 41" tall
• 2.5" medium duty — the general-purpose choice, roughly 40" tall
• 3" heavy duty — exposed sites, vehicle areas and long deployments, roughly 41" tall

Diameter also determines which ball tops, C-hooks and sign adapters fit, so settle it before ordering accessories.

Then pick the finish

Same post, different job:

• Solid colour — colour-coding zones or matching a brand
• Striped — higher visibility in daylight
• Reflective striped — night work and vehicle traffic
• Safety label — where the barrier must carry a warning

Chain and fittings

Chain is sold by the foot in 1", 1.5", 2", 2" heavy duty and 3" link sizes. Heavier chain hangs with a better line and resists wind; lighter chain is easier to carry and store. You will also need C-hooks or S-hooks to connect chain to posts — see plastic chains and accessories.

For soft ground where a weighted base will sink, use ground poles with a stake instead.
