A retractable belt stanchion is a weighted post with a belt that pulls out of the head and clips into the next post. It is the fastest way to build a queue line that can be changed in seconds, and the most common barrier in airports, banks, stadiums, retail and reception areas.
Working out what you need
How many posts? Divide the run by the belt length, then add one. A 50 ft line with 13 ft belts needs about five posts — four gaps plus the post that ends the run. A longer belt covers the same distance with fewer posts, which usually costs less overall and is certainly less to store.
Belt length. 7.5 ft to 16 ft on standard posts, and up to 200 ft on the SkyPro long-run units. 11 ft and 13 ft cover most indoor queues.
Belt width. Standard is 2". Xtra-wide is 3", which is more visible from a distance and carries printed messages far better — worth it for safety warnings and branding.
Base. All of our retractable barrier bases are weighted and balanced so they are not easily knocked over, with a rubber ring underneath to protect the floor. A heavier base is harder to shift and harder to move deliberately — both matter, depending on the site.
Prices run from $58 for a QueueMaster to around $167 for a premium QueuePro, with Retracta-Belt and Tensabarrier in between.
Most of our retractable belt stanchions are designed and assembled in the USA from US and imported components — as it happens, several of our manufacturers sit within a few miles of one another on Long Island, New York. They are backed by a 3 to 5 year warranty, rising to 10 years on the Visiontron Retracta-Belt range. Ask us about a specific model and we will tell you exactly where it is built.
Questions we get asked
How many stanchions do I need?
Divide the length of the queue by the belt length and add one. A 40 ft run with 11 ft belts needs about five posts. Add extra posts for every corner or turn in the line — a belt only pulls in a straight line.
Can I connect different brands together?
Usually yes. Most retractable belt stanchions use a universal belt end that clips into the receiver on another maker's post, so Retracta-Belt, Tensabarrier, Beltrac and Queue Solutions posts will generally link to one another. Magnetic and S-clip belt ends are the exceptions to check.
What is the difference between a 2" and a 3" belt?
Width, visibility and how well it carries print. A 3" Xtra-wide belt reads from further away and shows a printed message clearly; a 2" belt is the standard and costs less. They are not interchangeable — the cassette and post head differ, so decide before you buy rather than after.
What is the difference between economy and premium posts?
Base weight, belt length, finish quality and warranty. An economy post does the same job in a low-traffic lobby; a premium post survives being knocked, dragged and reset several times a day, carries a longer belt so you need fewer of them, and is backed for longer.
My belt is worn or will not retract. Do I need a new stanchion?
Almost never. The belt and its mechanism come out as one cassette that drops into the existing post head, at a fraction of the cost of a new post. See the belt cassette fitment guide to find the one that fits your model.
Can these be used outdoors?
Some of them. Outdoor use needs a weather-rated post and belt — see site safety and outdoor stanchions. An indoor post left outside will corrode at the base and the belt will fade.
Can I get our logo or a safety message on the belt?
Yes. Belts are available in a wide range of colours, with stock safety messages such as CAUTION and AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY, or custom printed with your own wording and logo. Custom printing carries a one-off setup fee.
