A loop post is the simplest outdoor barrier there is, and that is the point. There is no cassette, no spring and no belt to retension — just a 2" 304 stainless post with 3/4" stainless loops welded straight through it, and a chain or rope running between them. Nothing to adjust at opening, nothing to replace when a guest yanks the line. It is the post that theme parks, zoos and outdoor ticketing use because it holds its form through a full season of weather and traffic.

At a glance

  • 304 alloy stainless steel post, 2" diameter
  • 3/4" stainless loops welded to the post
  • Two or four loops — four for corners, turns and intersections
  • Single line, or dual line with matching lower loops at 21"
  • Five base styles, portable through permanent
  • 40" post; 40"–42" overall depending on base
  • 21–39 lbs depending on base style
  • Rated for outdoor use
  • Chain and rope sold separately

Which model you are ordering

The loop count and the line layout are the two choices that set the part number.

  • ST620 — two loops, single line. A straight, continuous chain run.
  • ST620D — two loops plus matching lower loops. The dual line is ADA-friendly and makes line-ducking a lot harder.
  • ST640 — four loops, single line. Use it where the barrier arrives from more than two directions: corners, turns, T-junctions.
  • ST640D — four loops, dual line. Multi-direction layouts with the lower line carried through.

Five ways to stand it up

Pick the base that matches the surface, the permanence and how often the layout changes:

  • Removable — a floor receiver holds the post firmly, and the post lifts out for cleaning, maintenance or a seasonal change of layout. Socket caps keep the floor neat while the post is out. Standard and SLIM-SOCKET receivers are both available.
  • Fixed — the post is welded to a compact 5" steel plate and set with three fasteners. The economical choice where the post is never going to move.
  • Sloped cast iron — a portable 18 lb base, no floor modification at all. The one to pick if the line moves with the season.
  • Mini-Socket — the smallest installed footprint, nearly baseless, and it suits thinner floors where a deeper socket will not fit.
  • Magnetic — semi-permanent on finished floors you do not want to drill, with beveled plate edges and FLEX impact absorption.

The one base the loop post does not take is the recycled-rubber base. Budget roughly 15–45 minutes per post for the mounted styles, depending on the base and what you are fixing into; the cast-iron base needs no installation at all.

Chain and rope are sold separately

The post is supplied bare. For outdoors we recommend 3/16" polished stainless steel heavy-duty chain — it weathers the same way the post does, so the barrier ages evenly. Where you want a softer look indoors or under cover, the loops also take 1.5" cotton-core or braided polypropylene rope. Chain runs are finished with stainless snap ends and quick links, or with 304 stainless screw-lock quick links on their own.

Where these go

  • Theme park and amusement ride queues
  • Outdoor venue entrances and ticketing lines
  • Zoo and attraction guest pathways
  • Seasonal queue and perimeter layouts
  • High-traffic exterior waiting areas
  • Permanent or removable pedestrian boundaries

Two or Four Loops, Single or Dual Line

Loop count and line layout are what set the part number.

ST620 — two loops, single line. A straight, continuous chain or rope run.
ST620D — two loops plus matching lower loops at 21". The dual line is ADA-friendly and makes line-ducking much harder.
ST640 — four loops, single line. For corners, turns and intersections, where the barrier arrives from more than two directions.
ST640D — four loops with the lower line carried through, for multi-direction dual-line layouts.

Loops are 3/4" stainless, welded through a 2" 304 stainless post.

Portable, Semi-Permanent or Mounted

All five base styles are on the Style dropdown above. The one base the loop post does not take is the recycled-rubber base.

Removable — a floor receiver holds the post firmly and the post lifts out for cleaning, maintenance or a seasonal change of layout. Socket caps keep the floor neat while the post is out. Standard and SLIM-SOCKET receivers are both available.

Loop post mounting options: removable floor receiver, fixed plate, sloped cast iron, MINI-SOCKET and magnetic bases

Complete the Barrier with Chain or Rope

Loop posts are supplied bare — chain and rope are ordered separately.

Recommended: 3/16" polished stainless steel heavy-duty chain. It weathers the same way the post does, so the barrier ages evenly outdoors.
Alternative: 1.5" cotton-core or braided polypropylene rope, where you want a softer look indoors or under cover.
Hardware: stainless snap ends with quick links, or 304 stainless screw-lock quick links on their own.

Tell us your post spacing and how many runs, and we will work out the chain or rope length you need.

With over 20 years in the crowd control industry, we’ve worked with every major product and brand—giving us unmatched insight into quality, materials, and durability. Our direct relationships with factories allow us to bring you the best-performing stanchions and barriers at unbeatable wholesale prices. We’ve proudly helped top organizations like NASA, Walmart, and the New York Mets streamline their people flow systems. When you need expert guidance, our team is ready to recommend the best solution for your space and budget.

What is Crowd Control?

Crowd control, also known as queue management, is the strategic use of barriers to guide foot traffic, ensure safety, and improve flow in high-traffic environments. We offer everything from retractable belt stanchions and classic rope barriers to wall-mounted units and traffic barricades. These solutions are ideal for airports, retail stores, theaters, stadiums, banks, and industrial worksites.

What’s a Stanchion?

A stanchion is a vertical post used to form lines or barriers. It may be portable, fixed, or removable and connects with belts, ropes, chains, or panels. Stanchions come in materials like stainless steel, aluminum, and heavy-duty plastic for both indoor and outdoor use.

What Are the Post/Base Material Differences?

  • Aluminum: Lightweight, durable, and available in a range of finishes.
  • Stainless Steel: Heavy-duty, with polished or satin finishes. Choose 201 alloy for affordability or 304 alloy for long-term durability.
  • Plastic: High-density ABS plastic built for outdoor use and harsh conditions.

Economy vs. Premium: What’s the Difference?

  • Economy: For low-traffic areas; fewer customization options, but budget-friendly.
  • Value: Mid-range durability and limited but popular styles for high-traffic settings.
  • Premium: Built for constant use; more finishes, customizable features, and long-term reliability.

What Makes a Product Suitable for Outdoor Use?

  • Material: Plastic is always outdoor-ready. Aluminum and stainless steel can be weather-resistant or weatherproof.
  • Base: ABS or recycled rubber bases are used outdoors for durability and stability.
  • Visibility: Outdoor models often come in high-visibility colors like yellow or reflective finishes.

Do You Offer Permanent Mounting?

Yes. We carry:

  • Fixed Bases: Permanently installed to the floor.
  • Removable Bases: Use a floor socket to allow stanchions to be easily removed.
  • Magnetic Bases: Quick install and removal for flexible layouts. We recommend contacting our team to choose the best mounting solution for your layout.

Wall-Mounted Belts and Post & Rope Stanchions

  • Wall-Mounted Belts: Space-saving and ideal for doorways, corridors, or temporary closures.
  • Post & Rope Stanchions: Elegant and ideal for events, theaters, or VIP areas.

Why Are There Different Belt Lengths?

Belt lengths typically range from 7' to 16'. Here’s what to consider:

  • Shorter Belts (7’-10’): Ideal for tighter spaces and cost-saving.
  • Longer Belts (up to 15’): Cover more area with fewer posts.

Long belts require sturdier bases to prevent tipping. Our models balance safety and value, offering 10’ standard belts and 15’ for larger setups.

Pro Tip: Extend belts at least 6' when in use to reduce wear on the mechanism.

What is Fast Snap Back and Why Should I Care?

“Fast Snap Back” happens when a retractable belt rewinds too quickly—creating a safety hazard. Our stanchions use E-Z Back Technology for safe, slow belt retraction and include safety locks to prevent accidental release.

This safety feature is standard in all our models—even the economy line—so you can protect both patrons and staff.

How Do I Prevent My Stanchions from Tipping or Leaning?

Stanchion stability starts with proper assembly and strong post-to-base connections. We offer:

  • EVERstraight® Technology: A heavy-duty 2.5" steel pipe that resists leaning.
  • EVERstraight® PRIME: A self-straightening threaded connection—no tools needed. If your post ever loosens, simply twist it tight—no lifting or tools required.

What is ADA Compliance for Crowd Control?

ADA compliance ensures accessibility for all patrons, including individuals using wheelchairs or visual aids. Key standards include:

  • Dual Belt Stanchions: Required for cane-detectable barriers.
  • Minimum Lane Width:
    • 36" for straight or ≤90° turns
    • 48" for turns >90°

We also offer Magnetic Breakaway Belt Ends and other ADA-compliant accessories.

What Type of Rope Should I Choose?

Choosing the right rope adds style and functionality to your stanchion setup. Here's a quick guide:

  • Velvet Rope: Classic choice for museums, theaters, and red carpet events. Soft feel with a bright, elegant look.
  • Velour Rope: A premium, plush fabric for upscale venues.
  • Naugahyde Rope: Leather-like texture for a sleek, professional appearance.
  • Braided Poly Rope: Durable and outdoor-rated—great for long-term or industrial use.
  • Microfiber Rope: Soft, long-lasting, easy to clean, and fully customizable in color or print.
  • Plastic Chains: Lightweight and outdoor-rated, available in custom lengths.

All ropes are available in standard 6’ or extended 8’ lengths for ideal spacing and safety.

How Do I Assemble My Stanchion?

We make setup easy and tool-free. Most of our stanchions ship in a compact, knocked-down format to reduce shipping costs. Assembly steps:

  1. Place the base flat on the floor.
  2. Twist the stanchion post into the base until secure.
  3. Belts and tops are pre-installed for convenience.

If the belt won't connect, check the red safety tab—it may be locked. For rope stanchions, simply hook or clip the rope onto the post loops.

How Can I Store My Stanchions?

Proper storage protects your investment and extends product life. We offer:

  • Stanchion Storage Carts: Designed for both assembled and disassembled posts.
  • Built-In Rubber Floor Protectors: Prevent scratching and keep posts stable.
  • Ventilated Base Design: Allows airflow to reduce moisture buildup.

Whether you're storing them short-term or long-term, we have space-saving solutions that work.

How Do I Add a Sign to a Stanchion?

Need to guide crowds or promote your brand? It's easy to add signs and toppers:

  • Universal Sign Adapters: Slip over the top of the post for a secure fit.
  • Variety of Options: Directional signs, branded panels, display toppers, and custom messages available.

Boost safety, communication, and visibility in any environment.

How Do I Replace a Retractable Belt?

Belt replacement is simple with our modular designs. Reasons for replacement might include:

  • Color changes
  • Wear and tear
  • Custom branding needs

Check product compatibility on the page or reach out to a Crowd Control Expert for help selecting the right replacement belt or stanchion parts.

How Do I Maintain My Stanchions?

Proper maintenance keeps your stanchions looking and performing like new:

  • Clean with a soft cloth regularly to maintain shine.
  • Store properly to avoid unnecessary wear.
  • Keep belts retracted or extended to at least 6’ to reduce stress on the mechanism.
  • Choose the right model for your environment—especially for outdoor or high-traffic use.

We carry replacement parts and accessories to extend your product’s lifespan.

Can I Customize My Order or Get Bulk Discounts?

Absolutely! We offer:

  • Custom belt printing, post finishes, and signage
  • Pre-bundled kits for cost-effective solutions
  • Volume discounts for large orders

Our Crowd Control Experts are happy to help you customize a solution that fits your budget and brand.

How Can I Reduce Wait Times, Improve Line Flow, and Maximize Space?

Every business is different, but here are key tips:

  • Use clear signage and stanchion layout to guide traffic.
  • Choose long belts or dual lines to cover more area with fewer posts.
  • Opt for ADA-compliant setups for accessibility and compliance.

Why Buy From a Distributor Instead of Direct From the Manufacturer?

A manufacturer can only sell you what it makes. We carry Tensator, Queue Solutions, Lavi Industries, Visiontron, US Weight, and Mr. Chain—so we can spec the same job across all six brands and match the post, belt length, and base to your site, rather than to whatever comes closest in a single catalog.

We’ve supplied crowd control equipment since 2002, so we also know which replacement parts fit which posts, which finishes hold up outdoors, and what a lane actually needs once it’s installed. For a size, finish, or part that isn’t listed on the site, call (800) 516-2115 and we’ll quote it.
